Last we’d heard of Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery, the twice-convicted Wisconsin native seemed to grow uncharacteristically bitter with his former lawyers, even as new attorney Kathleen Zellner prepared his next appeal. All involved were taken aback last week when Avery’s “accomplice” Brendan Dassey had his conviction overturned, but what do Zellner and Avery believe it means for him?

Per WBAY-TV (h/t UPROXX), Avery’s family was actually visiting him at the time word of Dassey’s overturned conviction broke, of which Avery’s cousin Carla Chase stated “He was kind of stunned because he can’t believe that it actually came through. He was in a little disbelief.” Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner also reportedly visited on the same day, telling WISN News:

We fully expected this outcome from an unbiased court that carefully examined his confession. I was just visiting Steven Avery, and he is so happy for Brendan. We know when an unbiased court reviews all of the new evidence we have, Steven will have his conviction overturned as well.

Worth noting, Dassey’s overturn emphasized the unlawful methods with which authorities coerced a confession from a mentally-unfit teenager, leaving the state of Wisconsin 90 days to re-try or release him. Avery’s own appeal is due to be filed at August’s end, but it remains to be seen if Dassey’s ruling will offer any aid. If the state fails to produce admissible evidence of Dassey’s involvement, it might poke significant holes in Avery’s alleged crimes, to have disposed of Teresa Halbach’s body on his own in already-short time.

Either way, Making a Murderer Season 2 is off to an impressive start, but will Avery have as much success as Dassey?
