I was shocked when I learned the Detroit Lions chose not to re-sign defensive end Za'Darius Smith, but if he gets his way, he could return to the Motor City.

I was very excited when the Detroit Lions announced in 2024 that they were acquiring Za'Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns as a defensive end. Smith had been in the NFL since 2015, playing 4 seasons for the Baltimore Ravens, 3 for the Green Bay Packers, 1 for the Minnesota Vikings, and 2 for the Cleveland Browns.

When Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson went down with a broken leg, all of us fans were in shock because he was off to a record-breaking season. When the Lions announced they were bringing in Za'Darius Smith, I was excited, but even more excited about the thought of when Hutchinson would return. Could you imagine having Hutchinson on one side of the defense and Smith on the other?

According to MLive, Za'Darius Smith said, "Hopefully, I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I'm there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully, I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit."

I don't doubt the knowledge of Lions general manager Brad Holmes. Holmes has proven himself to be a smart guy, but that is why he thought $11 million for Smith was too much for a player on the backside of his career. The good news is Holmes has not ruled out the possibility of Smith's return and is keeping in contact with his agent.

The Lions re-signed Marcus Davenport and picked up Ahmed Hassanein in the 6th round of the NFL Draft. With Hutchinson returning and the potential addition of Smith to the defensive mix, the defense will be tougher than ever and deep in the position.
