You live in a swing state, which means the stakes are high for both candidates looking to spend the next four years in the White House. It also means you are inundated with political ads on TV, radio (my apologies), online, and in your mailbox.

Chances are a handful of political mailers land in your mailbox every day. (Every. Damn. Day.) But a business in West Michigan has a solution - and is offering a discount based on all that political junk mail.

A Discount for Your Political Junk Mail

Presidential Brewing in Portage is offering customers a 1% discount for each political mailer they bring in and shred during the brewery's election night party this Tuesday, November 5 from 3 to 10 PM. Portage is about 20 miles south of Kalamazoo on Michigan's west side.

You can bring a maximum of 20 pieces of political junk mail for a discount of up to 20% off your bill - but you should easily be able to accumulate 20 pieces in a matter of just a few days, right?

According to a paywall-protected Mlive article, customers also receive a coupon for 24% off a future visit in November.

"Nothing says 'democracy' like shredding junk mail for discounts," says a press release from the brewery.

Presidential Brewing Co. is located at 8302 Portage Rd.

Does Political Junk Mail Really Work?

If you're anything like me, all that political advertising goes directly from the mailbox into the recycling box. So why are candidates across the US spending millions of dollars on political mailers?

Adrian Hemond is the CEO of Grassroots Midwest which produces direct mail pieces for both Republican and Democratic candidates. He tells WLNS-TV that he recognizes that direct mail pieces only get voters' attention for about three to eight seconds.

"None of these pieces individually are likely to sway the decision about who to vote for or whether to vote," he says. "The entire point is the cumulative effect."
