There is nothing—and I mean nothing—that beat having a snow day as a kid.

If you grew up in Michigan in the 90s, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Waking Up for the Scrolling School-Closure List

The magic of waking up early and keeping your eyes glued to the list scrolling across the bottom of the TV screen, praying that you saw your school listed among those closed for the day.

Kids these days will never know the thrill that came with watching and waiting to find out if your school was closed.

Snow days look different now — here’s my ode to how they felt when I was a kid.

Back when I was a kid, if it was a snow day, it meant you were playing outside. You wrapped grocery bags around your feet and stuck them into your winter boots to help keep your feet dry. You needed it, because you were so busy sledding, building snow forts and igloos, and having snow ball fights.

Once your face was nice and rosy and you had snot dripping down your nose, it was probably time to come in from lunch. Inside, you'd find that mom had made grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup and The Price is Right was on in the background.

Maybe, if you were really lucky, mom broke out the instant hot chocolate mix, too.

Snow-Day Fashion: Then vs. Now

These days, I'm not too sure how kids spend snow days. But seeing as how I'm in my mid 30s and I've got a kid of my own, I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. And when I do, I'm going to try to make them just as magical as I remember them being.
