Does Michigan Have Monster Catfish Big Enough to Eat Small Animals?
Most of us have seen the videos of those monster catfish that weigh hundreds of pounds. These catfish get large enough to eat cats, dogs and other small animals. Some believe that these giant catfish have even swallowed humans...but so far, no definite proof has been found. Faked AI videos and photos surface occasionally online that may show a pair of “human legs” sticking out of a catfish’s mouth.
In India and Nepal, there is a type of giant catfish called a goonch, which is believed to have swallowed three boys in the Kali River. Witnesses saw the boys pulled underwater by something that looked like a “mud-colored water pig” but no bodies were ever recovered.
Which brings up the question: does Michigan have giant catfish big enough to swallow a human? So far, the largest Michigan catfish caught on record was a 53+ pounder pulled out of the St. Joseph River in 2022. Can they get bigger than that? Definitely, oh yeah. With the vast amount of people fishing for ‘cats’ in Michigan, there’s not enough time for the fish to get much bigger than 40 pounds.

Some of Michigan’s best lakes for catfishing (along with top catfish weight) are: Belleville Lake, 40 pounds
Houghton Lake, 20 pounds
Lake St. Clair, 25 pounds
Muskegon Lake, 30 pounds
Sanford Lake, 40 pounds
Wampler’s Lake, 15 pounds
Wixom Lake, 40 pounds
Wolf Lake, 40 pounds
Other places noted for excellent catfishing are:
Detroit River
Grand River
Hardy Dam Pond
Holloway Reservoir
Huron River
Kalamazoo River
Manistee River
Muskegon River
Saginaw River
St. Joseph River
Tittabawassee River
How big can they get?
The largest catfish to date was caught in 2005 in Thailand, weighing 646 pounds. But the original question: does Michigan have catfish large enough to eat small animals like cats and dogs? YES. Channel catfish get up to 40 pounds and at least three feet long and are capable of swallowing your pet.
In closing, will any of these Michigan locations ever have catfish over 100 pounds?
Just give ‘em time. There could already be some, just lurking and waiting beneath the surface...
