My mommy always told me not to worry when I saw lightning on a hot summer night because it was just heat lightning with no storm to worry about, and I always believed my mom. Now I'm finding out she made it up! Oh no!

I am crushed. All these years, I'm not saying how many, I have believed her story to be real. There wasn't any thunder either, just the lightning. Say it isn't so.

I supposed next you're going to tell me Big Foot isn't real.

But, you know what, I get it now. She was just soothing my scared and ruffled  feathers as she tucked me in at night.

IS HEAT LIGHTNING REAL?

Nope, not at all, according to the website Weather.com. They say:

"This theory is completely false, and heat lightning does not actually exist.

The flashes of light you are seeing are indeed lightning, but the lightning is from a distant thunderstorm far enough away where the sound of thunder doesn't travel all the way to where you're observing it from.

You can see lightning from a thunderstorm up to 100 miles away, but unless you're within 10 to 15 miles of the storm, you probably won't hear the thunder."

I know I am not alone in this conundrum. We all grew up with stories from mom, dad and grandparents too, do not worry because because it's just "heat lightning."

So parents and grandparents, you better change your stories a bit. Do you want to ruin your kids lives for ever?

Speaking of kids, I guess I'd better call mine and tell them the truth. Oh, the pain of it all!

Casperites Share Scary Beautiful Pics of Lightning Storm

July 15, 2025. 📸 On the south west side of town, the sky looked like a strobe light. While there were a few lightning strikes that touched the ground, hundreds -- maybe thousands -- of strikes contributed to a sheet lightning storm, also known as intra-cloud lightning. This happens when electrical charges connect with a thunderstorm cloud, creating a disco-effect. But there were still plenty of cloud to ground strikes, and readers were quick to share them! ⚡
