Michigan’s Rules For Owning Exotic Pets May Surprise You
Is owning an exotic pet legal in Michigan? Yes it is, for some anyway.
WHAT IS AN EXOTIC PET?
By definition an exotic pet simply means any animal that isn’t typically domesticated.

According to the website Animal of Things.com, think of "wild animals, hybrids, and unusual species not native to the U.S. or Michigan in particular. They will include reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians, and even insects."

Michigan's laws are a little more relaxed than many other states, but there still are strict regulations for owners to follow if they are dead-set on owning what is considered an exotic pet.

Foxes, Skunks, Raccoons, Hybrid Cats, Beavers, Otters, Minks, Sugar Gliders and other small Marsupials, Hedge Hogs, Ferrets, Snakes and more, all require permits with lots of paper work to fill out before you can be approved to own one.

These laws and regulations are specifically designed to protect the owner and the pet. It is amazing how many "special pets" are mistreated after someone buys one. Seemed like a good idea at the time, right?

Nope! all of these pets and more require a much more exotic habitat. You can't put some food and water in bowls and hope for the best. You're certainly not going to walk a Snake or Hedge Hog, are you. They all require special care, and you have to be up for it.

Another thought here is that not all vets are qualified to care for an exotic animal. How will you be able to provide medical attention if needed?
Now you see it! A lot of thought needs to go into owning an exotic pet.
