Are you saying that if I need cold, cough and sneeze relief I may not be able to buy things like Nyquil, Sudafed, Benadryl, and Mucinex anymore?

What's up with that?

In early November of this year, CNN.com reported the US Food and Drug Administration announced a proposal to remove oral phenylephrine – a common ingredient in many popular over-the-counter decongestants – from the market, citing evidence that it doesn’t work.

You have to be kidding. After all these years of suffering through a bad cold and taking one of these so call cold relief medicines, in pill form, I have basically been taking a placebo? Pretty much.

Basically, medical experts say that phenylephrine, the main ingredient, is absorbed by the body so well that very little reaches the blood stream to give you any relief.

And I could have sworn I was feeling better. I guess power of the mind.

But, hold your horses because it hasn't happened yet. They are still considering action. However, you may find that many pharmacies have been preemptively removing them from their shelves.

Here's a list of options recommended by doctors and pharmacists, according to the Seattle Times:

Nasal sprays like Flonase and Afrin for short-term relief. They are addictive, however.
Saline irrigation devices—those bizarre neti-pots
Oral antihistamines like Zyrtec, Claritin, and Alegra
Behind-the-counter meds with pseudoephedrine (the real MVP of decongestants)
