If you’ve been anywhere near downtown Grand Rapids lately, you’ve probably noticed that the I-196 and U.S. 131 interchange still looks more like a construction zone than a finished project, even though it was supposed to be wrapped up by now.

Crews have been working for weeks on five bridges as part of a $1.3 million project meant to extend the life of the structures. That’s all well and good, but if you’ve been avoiding the lane and ramp closures since September, you’re probably wondering when it’s finally going to end.

The original end date for the project was supposed to be Wednesday, Oct. 29. Then it was pushed back to Sunday, November 2nd. Then again, to Wednesday, November 5th.

Now, MDOT says the closures are extended through at least 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7th. Though even that’s not a sure thing now, with this weekend's forecast calling for lows in the 20s and a possible chance of accumulating snow.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), we can blame Mother Nature for the delays this time. Cold overnight temperatures dipping into the 30s have slowed down the curing process for the new concrete, making it way too chilly for the material to harden properly.

And while it’s frustrating to have to wait a few extra days or weeks to take our usual routes again, it’s for a good reason at least.

So yes, it’s frustrating. But according to MDOT, the goal is to make sure the repairs last and the bridges are safe long-term, even if that means a few more days (or weeks) of orange barrels and detours.

If you’re planning to drive through the area this weekend, check MDOT’s online construction map for the latest updates and alternate routes.
