Tale of Two Kitties: Meet The Viral Cats Watching Over Grand Rapids
If you’ve opened TikTok or Instagram at any point this past week, you’ve probably met at least one of Grand Rapids’ newest accidental celebrities, both of which happen to be cats with some of the best views in the city.
The first star to pop up on everyone’s feed is Phoebe, now affectionately known as the S-Curve Kitty. Her owner posted a simple, sweet video showing her perched in the window above the notorious US-131 S-Curve.
According to the video, Phoebe watches over it every day, keeping an eye on the traffic flowing just below her paws making sure everyone makes it home safe. (Although one commenter hilariously pointed out that Phoebe probably saw her crash her car.)
That small moment (just a cat doing what cats do) took off nationally. People fell in love with the idea that a calm, fluffy little guardian looks out over one of Grand Rapids’ most chaotic driving zones. The video has since been shared across the country, and locals have jumped in with jokes, edits, and even their own appreciation posts.
And now we have another kitty keeping watch.
This time it’s Yeti (better known online as Van Andel Arena Kitty) who lives in an apartment overlooking the arena and its constant rotation of concerts, sporting events, and “only-in-GR” crowd moments.
His window view sits right above the heart of downtown’s entertainment district, and whether fans are filing in for a sold-out show or shuffling out after a Griffins game, Yeti is apparently there, supervising the whole thing.
Based on the video making the rounds, Yeti looks like he’d absolutely let you pet him if you asked nicely.
It’s been a fun, oddly wholesome week watching these two cats show up across our feeds. one watching over commuters on the S-Curve, the other keeping tabs on the city’s biggest arena. And maybe it sounds a little silly, but Grand Rapids really does feel a bit brighter knowing we’ve got a pair of furry unofficial mascots looking out their windows as the rest of us go about our day.
