Michiganders love their cannabis, there's no debate based on record sales in 2021 and likely 2022. It's hard to go any distance without seeing a dispensary or a billboard for one along Michigan's roadways.

While cannabis consumption and purchasing is legal here, it's not legalized on a federal level, which means it's been a tricky road to navigate for those who sell marijuana in the mitten state.

Because of the fact that marijuana is illegal on a federal level, many banks and credit card companies can't or won't work with dispensaries to move money electronically, in fear that they may end up breaking the law.

However, the industry finally managed to find a loophole for this by basically being an ATM for you. What happens when you use your debit card: they punch in your info into a mini ATM, and withdraw money on your behalf. That's why when you go to most dispensaries, they have to round up to the next full dollar amount in order to withdraw money, since most ATMs don't let you do exact money amounts.

Why can't I use my debit card at some Michigan dispensaries today?

Several Michigan dispensaries have sent out notices in the last 24 hours warning customers that they are having 'industry wide' outages for their debit card processing.

Noxx sent out a message to customers this morning, saying that they should be mindful of these outages, and that they are still happy to take cash and dutchiepay.

There's been no official reasoning why, but due to the unique way that dispensaries run cards, it may have something to do with why they are currently the only industry reporting this issue.

So if you plan to grab grass, make sure you have cash today or you might find yourself having to take an extra trip to the ATM.
