For weeks I’ve been catching myself smiling whenever I drive past the site of the soon to be Amway soccer stadium in Downtown Grand Rapids thinking,

“One day, it’s going to be so cool to catch a game there”

If you’ve been feeling the same little buzz, you’re not alone. The city has been quietly building towards the big announcement and we couldn’t be more excited about who we will be cheering on in the coming years.

Fans of the future team have traded guesses, mocked-up logos, and color-scheme fantasies online. Will the name nod to our lakes, our grit, or some weirdly specific Grand Rapids thing that only locals will laugh at? Will the crest look modern or historic?

If you want to see that reveal live and be part of the first chorus of fans to shout the new name, here’s the moment: the team will officially unveil its name and brand during a public rally on Saturday, September 27th at Calder Plaza, with festivities kicking off at 2pm.

What do we know so far about the future West Michigan Soccer Team?

The club (currently operating under the placeholder West Michigan Soccer) was announced in December 2024 and is slated to begin play in MLS Next Pro in 2027. That league, which currently has 29 teams, will expand by four franchises when Grand Rapids and three other cities come online.

Home matches will be played at the new Amway Stadium, a $175 million project on the city’s West Side just north of the David D. Hunting YMCA on Winter Avenue.

The plan calls for about 8,500 seats with room for 11,000 fans at full capacity. Beyond regular season games, the stadium is expected to host roughly 17 national and international matches yearly.

Plus the stadium hopes to add about 50 community tournaments and events, and the developers say the venue will attract roughly 160,000 visitors a year to Grand Rapids.

That’s a big economic and cultural boost for downtown. Just imagine the restaurants and late-night spots buzzing after big matches.

Look, names are important. They become chants, scarves, kids’ jerseys, and a part of your Saturday routine. Whether the new brand leans classic or a little wild, it will be the thing we all say when we talk about a summer night in Grand Rapids—standing with a beer (or a soda), watching a crowd roar, feeling like we belong to something bigger.

If you’ve been waiting to be part of the first wave, meet me at Calder Plaza on Saturday at 2 pm and let’s see what we’ll be yelling all fall and into 2027. Whatever they call it, I’m ready to buy the scarf.
