More Michigan Families Will Soon Get Monthly Cash Support Through Rx Kids
At a time when a lot of families are doing mental math at the grocery store and wondering how they’re supposed to make everything stretch, Michigan is expanding one of the most practical support programs in the state.
Rx Kids is a program that gives expecting parents cash during pregnancy and during a baby’s first months of life.
The program provides a $1,500 payment during pregnancy, followed by $500 per month for the baby’s first six to 12 months. Families can use the money however they need to, whether that’s diapers, rent, groceries, utilities, or just breathing room. And according to families who’ve already participated, that flexibility is exactly what makes becoming a parent work.
Rx Kids first launched in Flint back in 2024 and has already distributed more than $20 million to thousands of families across the state. It was the first program of its kind in the country, offering community-wide prenatal and infant cash support and it’s been growing ever since.
Until now, Kalamazoo has been the only West Michigan community included. But that’s about to change.
Starting January 12 at 9am, applications will open in several new communities, including Benton Harbor, Niles, Buchanan, Benton Charter Township, and Lake County, along with Saginaw, Buena Vista Township, and Bridgeport Township. Once applications open, families can apply directly through RxKids.org.
Rx Kids is already operating in a wide range of Michigan communities, from Flint and Kalamazoo to Pontiac, Ypsilanti, Clare and Roscommon counties, parts of the Upper Peninsula, and several Metro Detroit cities.
This week, the program also announced it’s expanding to Detroit, which will make it the largest city in the country to participate.
What’s fueling all of this growth is a bipartisan $270 million state investment spread over multiple years. And in a moment where conversations about supporting families can get loud and complicated, this program feels refreshingly helpful. Give families cash and trust them to know what they need most. And, help them get through one of the most important, and expensive, seasons of life.
