Michigan Fan Botches $1 Million Kick on College GameDay
If you’re a Michigan fan, Saturday was already… not great. Losing to Ohio State is pain enough, but one unlucky Wolverine managed to add a whole new layer of “oh no” to an already brutal day, and he did it on national television.
Meet Grant Silva, the Michigan fan who now has the rare distinction of missing not one, but two life-changing kicks on Pat McAfee’s College GameDay kicking contest. And when I say “missed,” we’re talking MISSED. It’s the kind of hook that’s so far left, it might still be traveling toward Lake Michigan.
This was McAfee’s final kicking contest of the season, and, true to form, he wanted to go out with a bang. Normally the kick is worth $500,000, but today he upped the stakes: Nail a 33-yard field goal, walk away a millionaire.
Simple, right? (For someone who isn’t taking their first-ever kick on live TV while thousands of screaming fans chant behind them.)
Silva lined up for his first attempt and immediately delivered one of the most dramatic slices we’ve ever seen on the show.
The crowd groaned. But, it didn’t end there. To Pat’s credit (since he’s an entertainer at heart) and a generous one at that. After Silva admitted this was literally his first attempt at kicking a football, Pat gave him a second shot and doubled the prize up to a Million dollars if this kid made it.
He backed up, And then…hooked it left again.
Same direction. Same heartbreak. Same “oh buddy, no.” You could practically see the million dollars floating off into the November air.
Here’s the video for you to watch for yourself:
For context, only one fan made the kick in the first year McAfee ran this thing. Last year, three more nailed it. This season, it became weirdly doable because at least five participants successfully hit their 33-yarder.
Pat has personally shelled out more than $1.7 million from his own bank account for this stunt. So he was ready for another winner today. Just… not from Michigan.
