So many of the foods and drinks we consume in the United States compared to other countries around the world are full of artificial and synthetic food dyes.

There is research that the synthetic food dye Red 3 causes cancer in animals, and there is evidence that several other dyes also are carcinogenic.

RFK Jr. Plans To Ban Artificial Dyes

On Tuesday Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the FDA will be giving the food industry two years to transition from petroleum-based synthetic dyes to natural alternatives.

What Artificial Food Dyes Will Be Removed?

Nothing is set in stone but as of now these are the petroleum-based synthetic dyes that will be banned include:

  • FD&C Blue No. 1

  • FD&C Blue No. 2

  • FD&C Green No. 3

  • FD&C Red No. 3

  • FD&C Red No. 40

  • FD&C Yellow No. 5

  • FD&C Yellow No. 6

  • Citrus Red No. 2

  • Orange B

If a ban on artificial dyes happens there will be lots of different foods and drinks that will be impacted right here in Michigan.
