I didn't know it but apparently it has a cool nickname.
How GRFD Engine Company #11 Got It's Nickname
The Chester Street Fire Station is nicknamed The Bat Cave"
You can see it on the bench outside of the fire station.
It's also proudly displayed on it's fire truck.
According to the Grand Rapids Professional Fire Fighters Local 366
bats get into the tower and find their way down into the hayloft.
They have made it into the living area as well, that's where the nickname came from.
I found out some other cool information about the Chester Street Fire Station aka "The Bat Cave"
- It was built in 1902
- It's the oldest active engine house in Grand Rapids
- It's a Grand Rapids Historical Commission Landmark
- It's Home to the 1937 American LaFrance
Earlier this year Station 11 just wrapped up a call near Diamond and Fuller and came over to say hi to Benny and Paddy.
I wonder if other G.R.F.D. stations have nicknames?
If you know of any please share with me.
