This one hurts. I found out while scrolling on my social media, hoping not to find anything heavy, only to discover one of my favorite Grand Rapids spots is getting ready to say goodbye.

Asada on Wealthy (formerly Basalt) shared a heartfelt post Monday, January 12th, from owner Steven Martinez, announcing that the restaurant will be closing later this month.

Steve said the words no business owner hopes to post: the business just isn’t sustainable anymore, but they’re grateful for the time they have to wind things down properly and say goodbye to the people who made it special.

Basalt opened six years ago, originally as a vendor at the Fulton Street Market, where they’ve continued to operate a stand even after opening their brick-and-mortar location on Wealthy Street in 2021.

For me, this one is personal. Visiting Steve was one of the very first traditions my husband and I formed when I moved to Grand Rapids in late 2021. Weekend mornings, breakfast tacos, the comfort of knowing exactly what you’re ordering and exactly how good it’s going to be, with some incredible friends behind the grill that always made you feel like you were home.

Losing Asada feels like losing a tiny but meaningful chapter of our life here, one that helped make this city feel like home.

Steve and his crew will continue serving breakfast tacos, brunch, and all your favorites through their final service on Sunday, January 25th so there’s still time to stop in, sit down, and say thank you with your order.

If you loved Basalt, If you love Asada, If you love locally owned spots that pour everything into what they do: now is the time to show up. Not just here, but everywhere. Our favorite places need us more than ever. And sometimes in the case of one of my forever favorites, the goodbye comes way too soon.
