Iconic Michigan Bridge Set to Close for 2 Months on Busiest Freeway

An iconic Michigan bridge will close for 2 months on the state's busiest freeway and Michiganders are not too happy about it.

Fix the Damn Roads

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer vowed in her two terms leading the state that she would "fix the damn roads." As far as I can tell from all the orange barrels around Grand Rapids and the rest of Michigan she is living up to her word.

Not only have roads been getting fixed, but several bridges have been repaired or replaced. There are some growing pains for Michiganders who commute on roads or bridges that get fixed. The bridge work from 131 to 96 caused me grief most of 2024 but it's all better now.

Iconic Michigan Bridge Set to Close for 2 Months on Busiest Freeway

I grew up on the east side of Michigan and traveled across the Zilwaukee Bridge near Saginaw several times either playing gigs in clubs or traveling up north. I have ice-fished the Saginaw River near the Zilwaukee Bridge several times for walleye. It is a massive bridge and part of Michigan's busiest freeway I-75.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, southbound I-75, Zilwaukee Bridge is set to close April 14 through June 27 for maintenance. Upkeep to a bridge this size is necessary. The repairs will no doubt cause grief for those who use it regularly. Below is what Michiganders said about the closure on the Michigan Reddit page.

I-675 will be the alternative to avoid the bridge and potential traffic backups.

It may be a first for many Michigan drivers to use I-675 to get around the Zilwaukee bridge repairs.

There is never a good time to fix a bridge but thankfully they are doing it because you would not survive in your vehicle if the bridge collapsed. This bridge is much higher than it looks in the photos.

Up north traffic can be herendess on weekends especially around holidays when crossing the Zilwaukee bridge.

At least one Reddit poster had a positive spin on the bridge repair.

Then there is that. This might be the year for those on the east side of Michigan to travel south for Memorial weekend.
