As we quickly learned after watching Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' the world has much more love to give to this intergalactic band of superhero misfits. Aside from the upcoming 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' in 2017, an announcement at New York Comic Con confirms a new animated TV series is coming to Disney XD, and the first poster and test footage for the affair have landed.

We had an inkling that a 'Guardians of the Galaxy' animated TV series for a while, but now we know the Disney XD series will premiere in 2015, after the announcement was made at New York Comic Con. Few details are available, but we do know from Marvel's Stephen Wacker, speaking with The New York Times, that it will be based on the core team members established in the film and will take place after the film's events, which saw the team battling Ronan The Accuser. Even better, is that Thanos will feature prominently. Does this mean the animated series will lead us up to 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'? Will any of the film's stars reprise their characters for the series? Neither are known at this time, but they're fun to think about.

In addition to these preliminary details, test footage (above) for the series debuted online following the NYCC panel, and the first poster has debuted over at Entertainment Weekly, providing us with a first look at Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot in animated form.

Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb will executive produce the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' animated series, while Stan Lee, Eric Radomski, Cort Lane and Stephen Wacker are on as co-executive producers. Other creative talent includes Marty Isenberg and Harrison Wilcox as supervising producers, Steven Melching as the consulting producer, and Leo Riley as the supervising director.Said Loeb:

This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy animated series. After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they'll get it.

According to President of Disney Channels Worldwide Gary Marsh, speaking with The New York Times, "I don’t think we have yet found our defining show." Could the 'Guardians' reignite Disney XD as the film did for this summer's box office?
