If you get a call about jury duty that seems off, it probably is.

Authorities are warning West Michigan residents about a jury duty phone scam, WZZM-13 reports.

Here's how it works: The caller tells the potential victim that they have failed to show for jury duty and must pay a fine or be arrested.

The scammer directs the victim to go purchase a prepaid credit card and to call back a certain number. When the person calls the number, a recording identifying the organization as the "Grand Rapids Police Department Warrant Division" plays.

Then the person is instructed to leave a message with the credit card number.

After the scammers get that information, they drain the card balance.

The GRPD and Kent County courts say this is not the way they conduct business.

Anyone who gets a call like this should call the Grand Rapids Police Department at (616) 456-3604.
