Grand Rapids Rainfall Totals Every Year Since 2000

As Michiganders, we put up with a lot when it comes to the weather. While I do personally enjoy having four seasons throughout the year, winter (and snow, especially) can be a real pain in the butt. However, the benefit is that you know you'll only need to put up with it for a few months before better times come around.

No matter what season it is, you can expect rain. In a state where the weather can change on a dime, we'll always have rain. This isn't a complaint. I love a good thunderstorm where I can sleep with the window open. But just how much rain does Michigan get every year?

Grand Rapids Rainfall

Michigan as a whole is not a very rainy state compared to much of the country, coming in 36th with an average of 33.71 inches of rain/year and 75 days of rain/year. But we can look specifically at Grand Rapids thanks to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA).

Since 2000, Grand Rapids has averaged just under 40 inches of rain a year. Our rainiest months are October (4,41in) and May (4.16in), and our least rainy months come during the winter January/February (both average 2.41in) and March (2.6in).

The rainiest month in the last 25 years came in April 2013 when GR got 11 inches of rain and the rainest year came in 2019 when GR finished with 51 inches of rain. The driest month on record was November 2012 when there was less than half an inch of rain all month, and 2002 was the driest year with 29.48 inches of rain.
