I'm playing a dangerous game writing this. At the time of posting on March 30th at 4:03 PM, it is 72°F, partly cloudy, the birds are chirping, and there's a splendid breeze. By all accounts, it's a lovely spring day. The only problem is, just last week, there was snow on the ground here in Grand Rapids, and that's not even mentioning the heavy snowfall totals much of Upper Michigan has been experiencing over the last two weeks.

However, I'm trusting my gut: I don't believe it will snow anymore this year. Michigan is officially in spring, and now that it looks and feels like it, let's see the total snowfall totals in Grand Rapids from this past season, month by month.

How Much Did It Snow Last Winter In Grand Rapids?

Grand Rapids saw 75 inches of snowfall this season, right in line with the region's average of 75 inches. January was an insane month for Grand Rapids.

The snowfall total and extremely cold below-zero temperatures not only made it the 7th snowiest January in Grand Rapids' history, but also one of the coldest days in the city's history.

November 2025

Michigan's first snowfall of the 2025-26 winter occurred on November 11th, when we got 1 inch of snow, but the first big snowfall took place across Thanksgiving, from on the 26th (1 inch), 27th & 28th (less than an inch each day), 29th (4 inches), and the 30th (4 inches), totaling 11 inches of snow in November.

December 2025

December saw a total of 15.5 inches of snow, with an inch of snow falling periodically throughout the month. By the 19th, most of the snow from November had melted. Sadly, we did have a white Christmas, but the snow picked up, ending the year with 3 inches falling on the 29th, 1 inch on the 30th, and 2 inches on the 31st.

January 2026

This is where winter truly came for Grand Rapids. January was the snowiest and coldest month of the season by far, with 39 inches of snowfall accumulating and Grand Rapids nearly breaking its all-time coldest temperature. It was Grand Rapids' 7th snowiest January since 1950.

In terms of snowfall, January saw an extended period from the 16th to the 22nd, with at least an inch of snow every day, resulting in 19 inches of snowfall by the 23rd. The weather got so bad that there was a 100-car pileup on I-96.

But the 23rd was also when things took a turn. On the 23rd, Grand Rapids had a two-day stretch of extreme cold, with the 23rd dropping to -15° and the 24th hitting -19°F, nearly surpassing the all-time coldest day in Grand Rapids history. Temperatures stayed in the single digits for the rest of the month, and 7 inches of snow fell on the 27th.

February 2026

February saw very little snowfall, but dealt with all the snow from the previous month. Around 10 inches of snow sat on the ground until the 10th, when temperatures picked back up, and the snow began to melt, even reaching 60°F on the 28th. Snowfall totals hit 9 inches, but very little snow was on the ground after the 17th.

March 2026

March has been snow-free, with less than a foot of accumulation and no snow on the ground throughout the month. Temperatures were above-average, with 14 days over 50 degrees. It is for this reason I am confident spring has sprung, and winter has passed.

With that, we wrap up a recap of the 2025-2026 winter season. It was one, quite literally, for the record books. Grand Rapids saw a good amount of snow, but it pales in comparison to some Upper Peninsula cities.
