Good or Bad Attempt To Divide Michigan By Regions?
A Reddit poster attempted to divide Michigan into six geographic/cultural regions and asked Michiganders to tell him what he got wrong and boy did they.
This is Not a Political Divide
Anytime someone mentions divide most automatically think politics. Today's divide has nothing to do with politics so stop puffing your chest and finding weird conspiracy theories it will be ok.
Michigander Attempts to Divide Michigan Into Six Geographic/Cultural Regions
Reddit poster "AllemandeLeft" attempted to create a map of Michigan dividing it into six geographic/cultural regions and color-coded them all. The poster then asked Michiganders to tell him what he got wrong and boy did they. The poster nailed the Upper Peninsula but several people had issues with the thumb, West Michigan, Mid Michigan, Up North, and Downstate + College.
Right out of the gate, the first poster was already down on the Downstate + College and how the Lansing area describes itself as Mid-Miichigan. I did like how the poster "guiturtle-wood" pointed out the graphic was crooked. Defiant-Giraffe brought up the "Thumb" region and it continues through the thread.
As you can see above the "Thumb" is getting to people and the same for West Michigan.
West Michigan and Southwest Michigan have come up again. Now Detroit is in play but the "Thumb" still seems to be the issue.
Now the battle of where "Up North" has begun. This one has been going on for hundreds of years and will probably continue until the end of time.

There seems to be a theme with the "Thumb" here. With all the colleges in the state, there is no way to lump them into a region. After all these comments from Michiganders, It would be interesting to see what the map would look like if recreated. Here is a link to the thread with hundreds of posts and yes there is room for your two cents.
