Food Network Says This is Michigan’s Best Breakfast Restaurant
If I had to pick one meal to eat for the rest of my life, it would probably be breakfast. A loaded omelet, biscuits and gravy, or simple eggs over easy with crispy bacon and buttery toast... It's all just so good!

Breakfast lovers like me know that when it's done right, it's worth the drive across town (or even the state!).
Plenty of restaurants across Michigan have built their reputations on exactly that idea, turning breakfast and brunch into something worth seeking out—and nationally recognized. We have covered quite a few of them before, like Lucy's in Grand Rapids and Dime Store in Detroit.
Now another familiar name has landed back in the spotlight!
The Food Network recently named its pick for the best breakfast in Michigan, and the restaurant it chose was crowned the No. 1 Guy Fieri-approved restaurant in the state.

The dish highlighted by Food Network is the Cowboy Curtis: a seared flank steak served with wild west sauce, two fried eggs, and toast. It is a hearty, no-nonsense breakfast plate built for people who are not easing into their morning.

But breakfast is only part of what keeps The Fly Trap a local favorite and on national "best" lists.

The menu stretches well beyond diner basics, offering salads, sandwiches, burgers, and unexpected dishes like tofu fried rice and lemongrass and Thai chili infused broth with wheat noodles. It is the kind of range you do not always expect from a neighborhood diner, but it has become part of its identity.
The restaurant also has a notable ownership story behind it.
Kara and Gavin McMillian first opend the Fly Trap, which they refer to as "a finer diner" in 2004. By 2022, it was time for a break and to find a better work-life balance. The Fly Trap was sold to Matt Buskard, a Michigan restaurateur and owner of the Bobcat Bonnie’s brand (which have since closed).
Buskard ultimately stepped back from the Fly Trap, citing the challenges of balancing multiple concepts, and described the decision as a matter of focus and sustainability in a difficult industry.
In 2024, the original founders, Kara and Gavin McMillian, returned to reclaim ownership of The Fly Trap, bringing the Ferndale diner back under the leadership that first built its following.
