I was ice fishing with a buddy in the U.P. one spring, and we had to lay some boards down on the edge since it was melting to drive out the ATV to fish. It sounds crazy, but the ice stays thicker in the middle when the edges start melting.
I've seen snow in the ditches of the U.P. as late as June. It takes a bit to thaw out the U.P. If you get up to Lake Superior, you can see special thawing near the lake's edges.
