I grew up in Michigan but was late to the finding of the Petstokey Stone party.

Petoskey Stones are found mainly on the northwestern side of Lake Michigan. Petoskey stones were formed by glaciers that ground off the edges and deposited them on the edges of Lake Michigan. Petoskey Michigan is a great location to look for these stones and probably the reason a city has its name.

My son and I look for Petoskey stones a few times a year.  It is mainly when we do our family vacation up to Arcadia. I have only found one in 7 years of looking but my son finds some every year. Spring is one of the best times to look for them but I'm never up north during that time.

The average size of a Petoskey stone is about 1 to 2 inches but they get bigger and are rare for people to find. My son found one that weighed about 3 pounds but only one side of the stone had the Petoskey look.

I learned that if you find a Petoskey stone that weighs 25 pounds or more in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources can confiscate it and there is nothing you can do about it. According to MLive, a 93-pound Petoskey stone is on display at the Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit which was confiscated from a Michigander in 2015.
