While the South is known for its hospitality, the Midwest is known for its over-the-top politeness. Heck, Michigan is so overly polite, that we have our own (sometimes problematic) "Michigan Goodbye" because many Michiganders are too polite to know when to end a hangout.

Apparently, though, a new study has shown that that Midwest politeness is missing from Michigan's largest city.

Which Cities Are The Rudest?

Best Betting MI, a betting and casino site based in Michigan, surveyed 2000 people from around the Midwest asking how polite they think people in their cities are. Their survey found Indiana had the top two rudest cities in the Midwest (Evansville and Fort Wayne), though Missouri had three in the top 10 (Kansas, Springfield, and St. Louis at 7, 8, and 9). Rockford, Illinois was third, and Columbus, Ohio was in fourth.

However, according to Midwesterners, the fifth rudest city in the Midwest is Detroit, scoring 5.59 out of 10 on the rudeness scale (1 being polite, 10 being the rudest). Though there wasn't much of an explanation of why they got this ranking, Detroit has been popping up in quite a few surveys lately. Forbes recently ranked Detroit among the worst drivers in the US. That coupled with being one of the rudest states can't bode well for Michiganders.

Other Survey Findings

The survey also asked Midwesterners about many of the stereotypes that we are known for.  41% of people use the word "ope", 74% of people apologize when they've done nothing wrong, and 64% of people wave to people they don't know. I am among that 41% - I am a chronic 'Ope'r.
