WATCH: Red Wings Game Filmed On 100 Year Old Camera, Looks Incredible
2026 is a huge year for the Detroit Red Wings, as the team marks its 100th year as an organization in a variety of ways. Even though the team's official 100th season isn't until next season, they're still getting the celebration started.

Already, the team has produced a mini-documentary featuring footage from over the years, but perhaps the coolest thing they've done is to do the reverse: create footage of the modern game with a camera from 100 years ago. It's a cool take on embracing the past, and boy oh boy, was it a nostalgia trip.
Red Wings History: 1926 to Now
The Detroit Red Wings are one of the "Original Six" teams, along with the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers. While the team started as the Detroit Cougars, it rebranded in 1932 as the Red Wings we know today.

The team has a total of 11 Stanley Cup trophies, including wins in 1936, 1937, 1943, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008, and 24 Finals appearances.
100 Years Ago, 100 Years Later
The game appears to have been filmed on a R.B. Graflex Series B 3x4 by Kodak from ~1910. The camera has an auto-focus feature and you can view what is being shot from the chimney-style view finder. It was essentially the basis for a modern camera. It was most popular in the 40s and 50s, but started production in 1898.
Now, I know what you're thinking: how are these photos in color if the camera is from 1900? This is a question I also had, until I realized what a fool I was being. The camera doesn't shoot in color, despite how it appears in the photos. At the end of the day, the camera is just capturing what's in front of it; it's the film that makes the photo in color.
This game was chosen for the vintage photography because the Maple Leafs and Red Wings have been playing each other as long as the camera has been around. You can view full photos of the matchup here.
