Dangerous Storms Possible In West Michigan Tonight
Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms, some potentially on the strong to severe side, are forecast for tonight in West Michigan. The Storm Prediction Center has placed part of the west side of state in an 'enhanced risk' for severe weather, That area includes Holland, Grand Rapids, Muskegon and areas north toward Traverse City. Most of the lower peninsula is in the 'slight risk' category for severe weather including Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and surrounding areas.
Several meteorologists around the state are reporting that tonight's potential severe weather could be on the significant side. The heaviest storms are likely during the evening but storms are expected to continue in some areas through the overnight hours.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a Flood Watch for most counties in West Michigan from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Counties included in the watch are Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, Eaton, Ionia, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Ottawa, and Van Buren.
Recent rain from thunderstorms over the past couple of nights have saturated soils and caused elevated water levels in parts of the region. The rainfall rates in the stronger storms tonight could easily top an inch per hour tonight. Where the storms repeat, an increased risk for more than 4 inches of rain exists. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
