When I was younger, I was dating a girl who lived closer to Detroit Metropolitan Airport. I don't know if they have a designated aircraft viewing area, but we would park the car by a fence where the planes landed. We would lie on the roof, and planes would fly over us.  It was very intense, but a great place to talk between planes landing.

While you are waiting for a plane or waiting for someone to land, that isn't the only place to view aircraft in Grand Rapids. Gerald R. Ford International Airport has a designated area where people can watch planes take off and land, called the "Aircraft Viewing Park."

Aircraft Viewing Park at Gerald R. Ford International Airport is open to the public, but has long been a secret place to hang out. The park has a pavilion with bathrooms, filtered drinking fountains, picnic tables, and lots of seating and parking. Below is what West Michigan has been saying on the Grand Rapids Reddit page.
