As a kid growing up in Michigan, after dealing with chicken pox, we didn't want the mumps or measles.
Like most viral infections, the mumps are contagious. Mumps causes swelling of the salivary glands. Most of the time, it's no big deal because most cases are mild and get better on their own.

Complications from mumps can lead to death. The most serious complication is encephalitis, which causes inflammation of the brain. The risk of death from mumps is extremely low because most people are vaccinated.
Nine Cases of Mumps Have been Reported in Michigan for 2025
According to WXYZ, in 2025, Michigan reported 9 cases of mumps. The latest cases happened in Oakland County, and this is the first case since 2022.
The Oakland County Health Department urges residents to get vaccinated. The MMR vaccine protects from mumps, measles, and rubella, and is highly effective.
Mumps spreads through contact with saliva or respiratory droplets from the mouth, nose, or throat. It may take over 2 weeks to show symptoms. Below is a list of symptoms for mumps:
- Chipmunk Cheeks - swelling of glands on either side of the face
- Jaw Pain
- Sore Facial Glands
- Loss of Appetite
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Fever
