Measles Has Been Detected In Allegan County
Just as measles cases seemed to quiet down in Michigan, another county has reported a case. This time, the county is Allegan.
Michigan Counties With Confirmed Cases of Measles
Vaccination rates have been steadily declining, but measles outbreaks are on the rise in the United States. Anti-vaccination efforts intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a decrease in routine childhood vaccinations.
In 2000, measles was declared eliminated in the United States thanks to a highly effective vaccination program. This was monumental since the virus had been a problem in the U.S. since the early 1700s.
Measles cases have been confirmed in several Michigan counties, including Ingham, Kent, Macomb, Montcalm, Oakland, and now Allegan has been added to that list. Declining vaccination rates in the U.S., mixed with citizens traveling to other countries, and unvaccinated visitors from other countries have all contributed to the measles outbreak.
