A View from Atop One of the Most Iconic Marquees in Michigan

Harry Phillips, Director of Marketing for the Kalamazoo State Theatre was in a bit of a pickle. You see, the State had been running a live concert series called State on the Street, wherein bands would set up on top of the State Theatre marquee and play from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. But this week he wouldn't be able to emcee the State on the Street. Why? Because he was performing in it as guitarist for Lisa Can't Sing. So, rather than try to do double duty, I jumped at the chance to emcee in his stead.  Who wouldn't? I mean, it's been so long since we've heard live music, and getting the chance to see a band perform all U2esque with the iconic State Theatre marquee as their backdrop? How could I miss this? Plus, I really did want the chance to see what it was like on top of that most famous of Kalamazoo signs. If you missed last Friday's State on the Street, no worries; State on the Street will continue on Fridays through the rest of October. You can grab a drink, take home some merch, and even do a tour of the 93 year old theatre. I promise you it's worth every penny.

As far as my very unique opportunity to rub elbows with the band that was taking the oh-so-precarious stage last Friday, well, I just couldn't keep that experience to myself. Check out the view, the band... and the surprisingly small space one has to squeeze through to get "on stage". We're still wondering how Dave got his drum kit up there...
