After a year of lockdowns, masks, and COVID restrictions, people are ready to get out and take a vacation.  But a new survey by WalletHub.com ranked 3 Michigan cities as some of the worst travel destinations of 2021.

The survey by WalletHub ranked the 100 largest metro areas in the country and determined 2021's Best Summer Travel Destinations.  Sadly, Michigan's cities that made the list were ranked really poorly.  In fact, Lansing, MI took the top spot as the worst place to visit.

Detroit and Grand Rapids both made the list as well, ranked 88th and 70th respectively.  You can check out the 5 best and worst travel destinations below.

  3. New Orleans-Metairie, LA Metro Area
  4. Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown, TX Metro Area
  5. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta, GA Metro Area

5 Worst Summer Travel Destinations In 2021

  3. Cape Coral-Fort Myers, FL Metro Area
  4. Portland-South Portland, ME Metro Area
  5. Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ Metro Area

The Lansing / East Lansing metro area was considered the worst summer travel destination of 2021 and it really isn't that surprising.  Other than the State Capital and Michigan State University, what does Lansing really have to offer?  Not too much, unless you like partying in college towns.  Plus, Lansing was ranked as the second most dangerous city to visit other than, you guessed it, Detroit.

Grand Rapids was the only Michigan city to get any sort of love, ranking 14th overall in travel costs and hassle.  You can see an interactive map that shows all the rankings below.

The methodology that WalletHub used was ranking the metro areas based on 6 key dimensions: Travel Costs & Hassles, Local Costs, Attractions, Weather, Activities and Safety.  Those dimensions were broken down into dozens of individually weighted metrics to determine the rankings.
