It's been said that the Midwestern accent is  the most widely perceived "mainstream" American English accent.  In fact, a lot of TV and Radio broadcasters prefer their anchors and DJs to have this Midwestern accent because "it plays well in all parts of the country."

That is until you start to dig deep into the accent and realize that us Midwesterners, particularly Michiganders, have some really interesting pronunciations.  For one, we love to pronounce the letter "I" as an "E".  And that's just the tip of the iceberg!
