Western Michigan University Student from Allendale Found Dead in Her Residence

A 19-year-old student from Allendale was found dead this morning in her Western Michigan University residence hall room in Kalamazoo, WMU officials said today.

The WMU student was identified as Alyssa Olafson, a freshman majoring in pre-health and human services and a 2013 graduate of Allendale High School. She had made the dean’s list her first semester last fall.

Olafson had been found unresponsive in her Eicher Hall fifth-floor suite at 1:21 a.m. EST today, said Cheryl Roland, executive director of University Relations.

In a statement, she said:

Public safety was immediately notified, but emergency responders were not able to revive her. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy was done this morning in Lansing, but it could be several weeks before the final results are announced. WMU’s Department of Public Safety is handling the investigation.”

There was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role, according to WMU. Investigators indicated that a pre-existing medical condition might have been responsible, WKMI Talk Radio 1360 reported.

University counselors are working with students and Eicher Hall staff dealing with the loss, Roland said.

Thoughts, prayers and condolences are flowing on Olafson’s Facebook page. According to her Facebook page, she had worked as an aide at Harbor House Ministries.
