97.9 ’GRD Rocks hosts the 2014 WGRD Pond Hockey Classic, presented by Labatt Blue and Dematic this weekend.

Thirty-eight teams will play on the frozen surface of Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids starting tonight, with play over three days concluding with the three division finals on Sunday afternoon.

The teams, consisting of rosters of six to eight players, compete in four-on-four games.

The rinks are built using water, shovels, small plows and hay barrels, with nets that are six inches high and six feet wide, said Angela Paasche, Townsquare Media Grand Rapids' Live Events Manager.

There are more than 300 players taking part and the teams are from across Michigan.

The WGRD Pond Hockey Classic’s opening ceremonies take place at 5:45 p.m. EST tonight.

Open skating is available free to the public all weekend.
