Following a successful Soundgarden reunion a few years back, Cornell played a series of acoustic shows he called The Songbook Tour. The concerts included songs spanning his career--  Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog tunes, plus covers, and his songs from his solo career. Cornell told Rolling Stone,

"The tour felt like a really special thing to me. For the first time as a solo artist, I felt like I had my own specific identity. It allowed me to draw a line through my whole career and make sense of it as one body of work."

Cornell says that with his new album, Higher Truth, he tried to stick with the vibe of The Songbook Tour, telling Rolling Stone,

"I wanted to make an album of original material that serves this Songbook touring thing. and makes it a living thing as opposed to a nostalgic one that looks into the past."

To support the new album, Cornell is embarking on a solo tour in September.
