A family in Whitehall is searching for their shih tzu named Dexter.

They say the dog escaped, was found by a woman, but then the woman gave their family pet away to strangers.

WZZM-13 reports that Dexter snuck out the back door of the family's home on Tuesday. A woman driving by found him on Michillinda Road. She had the right idea at first, bringing Dexter to animal control at Pound Buddies. She even put his photo on a Facebook lost dog page.

But then, once she got to Pound Buddies, instead of handing over the pup, she gave Dexter to some strangers shopping for a pet.

She didn't get their names, but the family is described as a husband, wife, and three young boys. They drove a white car.

Dexter's family, the Webergs, have posted pictureds of him online, hoping to get him back.

Owner Laura Webergsays, “I understand where the woman was coming from. She was there to help and be supportive and get the dog out of the road.  We appreciate that. At this point we are really hoping to reach out and get our dog back.”
