Dave Hastings, who founded a local charity in honor of his wife, has won a national contest for being a Local Hero.

Hastings, who is from Coopersville, runs the charity Lori's Voice, which is named after his wife, who suffers from Muscular Dystrophy. The purpose of Lori's Voice is to provide equipment, educational resources, and medical assistance to children with neuromuscular and other degenerative diseases.

Recently, Dave was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and yet somehow continued his mission to help local young people. Seeing her parents dedication through trying times, their daughter, Valerie Kelly, nominated Dave for the Local Hero Award, which is given nationally by Fiat ChryslerEl Dorado Mobility and the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association.

For winning the award, Dave recently received a fully customized, wheelchair accessible 2016 Chrysler Town and Country van. Which is good karma, considering he just helped a young man named Tony get a fully accessible van a few months ago.
