West Catholic beat Lansing Catholic 24-20 at Ford Field to win the Division 5 football state championship today.

West Catholic also won the Division 5 championship last year. The win was the 23rd straight for the Falcons, the third longest winning streak in the state.

West Catholic seemed in control for most of the first half, but it took a late score to overcome Lansing Catholic's strong second half.

West Catholic got out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter.

Lansing Catholic got on the board with a touchdown just before halftime. They missed the 2-point conversion and the score was 17-6 at halftime.

Lansing Catholic scored a touchdown with 1:37 left in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 17-13. With 7:38 to go in the 4th quarter, Lansing Catholic went for it on 4th and 10 and scored again to take a 20-17 lead.

West Catholic took back the lead, 24-20, with 1:07 left in the game after they scored a touchdown on 3rd and goal. An interception by West Catholic with 48 seconds left sealed the victory.

In the day's earlier games, Detroit Loyola beat Ishpeming 29 - 8 to earn the Division 7 title and Clarkston beat Saline 33 - 25 for the Division 1 championship.

UPDATE: In the last game of the weekend, Orchard Lake St. Mary's beat Muskegon to win the Division 3 championship, 7-0.
