Trent Reznor Composes ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ Theme

After a successful run in composing the scores for the films ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,’ Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor can add another title to his list. This time Reznor has created the theme for the upcoming video game ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II.’

USA Today reports that Reznor is a huge fan of the blockbuster franchise. ”I have always looked to that franchise as the cutting edge of what seemingly unlimited budgets and full-on not cutting any corners can do in the current day and age,” says the musician.

Reznor has been a gamer for most of his life and has previous experience in collaborating with game developers. He has worked with ‘Quake’ and ‘Doom 3′ creators id Software on their first-person shooters.

The plot for ‘COD: Black Ops II’ continues the dark themes from previous installments in the series. There is a new Cold War brewing between the United States and China, and both are being manipulated by an unknown force. This seems like the perfect setting for the industrial rock veteran.

“There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface,” Reznor states. “So it didn’t make sense to have a gung ho patriotic feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty.”

Reznor also touched on his How To Destroy Angels project with wife Mariqueen Maandiq and film score partner Atticus Ross.

“We have a finished album. It’s been finished for a little while,” Reznor revealed. “We’re doing a little bit of tweaks on it. The record will be out soon. We are doing a different type of distribution this time so it’s taking a little bit longer to coordinate stuff. There’s a lot of music about to be unleashed, videos, etcetera.”

As for Nine Inch Nails, fans will have to do a little more waiting to see something new since 2008′s ‘The Slip.’ ”Right now, it’s in its gestation period,” he says.
