A familiar face will be returning to coach the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Todd Nelson, who was an assistant with the Griffins in 2002-03, will be announced as the new head coach of the Griffins sometime this week.

The position became available June 9 when Jeff Blashill, who coached the Griffins for three seasons, was promoted to head coach of the Detroit Red Wings.

Nelson has an impressive coaching history. Most recently he served as interim coach of the Edmonton Oilers. After assistant coaching the Griffins, he went on to coach the Muskegon Fury and was an assistant with the Chicago Wolves when they won the Calder Cup in 2008.
