Tis the season for bitter cold temperatures and high heating costs but never fear, we have some tips on how you can keep your heating costs down.

According to WOOD and DTE Energy, with 8 straight days in a row of arctic cold in a row, it will take more energy to keep your home heated which will lead to higher energy bills at the end of the month.

Here are a list of money saving tips from DTE Energy:

  • For starters, you can save as much as 10 percent on your heating cost just by simply reeling your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day from your normal setting while you're at work.
  • Since moist air holds heat better and makes air feel warmer, using a humidifier to keep your heating source from drying out the air in your home will make you more comfortable.
  • You can also use your ceiling fan(s) at low speeds to help create an updraft that will force warm air near the ceiling back to the ground. So make sure and turn your thermostat down lower when using the ceiling fan to help circulate the warm air.
  • Also keep your furnace filters changed at least every three months.Since filters lower the amount of dust and dirt that can enter your ductwork then your home, if your filter is dirty, it will slow down the air flow causing your heating unit to work harder and raising your heating costs.
  • The south side of your home is where the sun can lend a hand heating your home. So leave blinds and drapes open during daylight hours to allow sunlight to enter your home. Make and close them at night to cut down on cold drafts windows can cause.

With heating costs rising October through February, some relief may be in sight because of a federal tax savings bill that gives you credit when you have to use more energy during cold months.
