No matter if you drive an old clunker like me, or a newer vehicle, there are several things you should remember to do to take care of your vehicle when in extreme cold temperatures.

According to WOOD, who happened to have a chat with Auto Zone manager, Mike D'Angelo, there are a myriad of things you can do to prepare your vehicle for subzero temperatures so you can stay on the road.

Here are a few tips that may make your winter driving experience a positive one, especially if there is an emergency:

  • When you know the temperature it is going to be in single digit or even below zero, make sure and warm your vehicle up, even if you don't plan to drive it.
  • Open and close doors periodically so the doors don't freeze shut.
  • Spray graphite in your door locks to keep them from freezing. DO NOT USE WD40, oil can actually gum up your locks.
  • Don't let your vehicle sit long periods of time in subzero weather without starting it.
  • Put windshield wiper in an upright position so they don't freeze to the windshield.
  • Keep a set of jumper cables in your vehicle.
  • Purchase a winter blend of washer fluid. These are less likely to freeze up.
  • Scrape as much ice and snow from your windshield and vehicle as possible.
  • It never hurts to keep some warmer clothes, boots, gloves and a shovel just in case you get stranded.

Keeping you vehicle clear of snow helps others see you plus it is against the law to allow snow or ice to fly off your vehicle. This could make it difficult for other drivers to see and keeps debris from hitting their vehicles and causing accidents.

Its also a state law for drivers to clean all snow from windshields, windows, taillights, headlights and your license plate.

Stay warm, and most importantly, make sure your vehicles stay warm.
