The Palace of Auburn Hills Confirms It’s Closing, Bob Seger Will Be Final Show
Another great Detroit area arena is shutting its doors, and a concert by Michigan icon Bob Seger will be its swan song.
As expected, the former home of the Detroit Pistons, The Palace of Auburn Hills has announced it will close for good on September 23, when Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band perform the final show at the venue, which opened in 1988.
It is the second major arena closure in Detroit this year, as the riverfront Joe Louis Arena ('The Joe') closed its doors following the Red Wings' season finale in May.
The move was expected after the Pistons announced they would be leaving to play their games at the new Little Caesar's Arena in downtown Detroit. The real estate surrounding the Oakland County location far exceeded any plans to keep the arena up and running, especially with the downtown arena stealing not only the Pistons, but most of the hot concerts.
It's a sad end for the 29 year old stadium, because it's still in good shape, especially following millions of dollars in improvements over the past few years.
The Palace had regularly been one of the top grossing concert venues in the nation during its prime, and leaves the Detroit area with just one major venue after it boasted of three for many years, The Palace, The Joe and Cobo Hall.
The Pistons celebrated their glory years in the building, winning NBA championships in the building in 1989,1990, and 2004.
