The Black Keys Talk Touring [Video]

"I used to just daydream about what it would be like to be on tour, to be in a band," says Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney in a new video. "I never thought it would happen."

Formed in 2001, Carney, and guitarist Dan Auerbach, certainly have been able to live out that dream -- and then some. The band made their first record in unsuspecting fashion for the legendary indie Bomp label. From that point on, it's been a steady climb to the top, something the guys talk about in this new video.

"When Dan and I made our first album, in 2001, all we wanted to do was make an album," Carney says, "and when we finished that first record, that's when we found out we had to start touring." Auerbach adds, "We toured in a four door rental car, we had like the drums in the trunk, the merch and the guitar amp in the back seat."

"The first few tours we were sleeping in the car. We had no money. By the time we got home from that tour, we were addicted," Carney adds. "We just never came off the road."

Sell-out tours, Grammy awards, mountains of praise from fans and peers alike have been added to the Black Keys story since that low key, lo-fi start up over a decade ago, but the band has maintained that spirit. "We still approach the concert the same way," says Carney, "It's all about the performance."

Auerbach sums it up this way, "It's hard work, but I'm pretty fortunate to be able to do what I love."
