After much review and discussion, we have decided to postpone the WGRD Pond Hockey Classic to February 12-14. That also means that you still have time to register your team!
The second day of the GRD Pond Hockey Classic started off a bit warmer than Day 1, and much warmer than last year!
This was both good news and bad news for the event.
Good news: A lot of people came out and took advantage of the great weather to hang out and party with GRD for the day of hockey.
Bad news because, well, that much warmth isn't really the best thing for ice.
The WGRD Pond Hockey Classic 2015 is done for the weekend and its remaining games will be rescheduled because of tenuous ice conditions at Richmond Park.
As of 9 p.m. EST Saturday, it was determined by tournament officials the ice at the Grand Rapids park was no longer in playable condition and Sunday's schedule has been canceled, said Angela Paasche, the tourney's director and Townsquare Media G
Forty-five-teams. Five rinks. Three days over one weekend. One park in Grand Rapids.
That pretty much sums up the WGRD Pond Hockey Classic 2015, which opened Friday night under the lights.
Mitchell Skiba plays for the Alpena Flyers in Alpena, Mich., and he managed the best/worst exit ever after getting ejected from a game over the weekend.
Skiba had just been given a penalty, and was skating off the ice angrily, when he decided to slam his stick into the wall as he skated off the ice. Bad idea, it turns out.
Talk about dedication to a sport. This guy loves pond hockey so much, he straps himself to a helicopter to get to a game on a frozen lake high up in the mountains.
It's been frickin' freezing out for the past couple of days hasn't it? I stood outside for maybe about 10 minutes and my earlobes were on fire from being cold! While for everyday life it sucks, but for Pond Hockey 2015, we couldn't ask for better weather.
Think pond hockey is just for the guys? No way. The WGRD Pond Hockey Classic is for everyone!
Because of popular demand, we have added a women's and co-ed divisions.
The WGRD Pond Hockey Classic 2015 is Jan. 23-25, 2015, at Richmond Hill Park in Grand Rapids.
Get your team signed up with 97.9 WGRD over the next couple days.
