In an inner-state rivalry between the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Athletics last night, A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy was smoked in the side of his head by a line drive from the bat of Angels shortstop Eric Aybar. The ball struck McCarthy so hard that the third baseman was able to field it off his head and throw the runner out at first.

The team won the Central Division and made it to the ALCS before being eliminated by the Texas Rangers.
