The 17-year-old who targeted fellow classmates at West Catholic High School with death threats on Instagram is now being formally charged in the case.

Several news outlets are reporting that the teen, Matthew Herrington, is also facing child pornography charges.

Herrington is charged with making a false report or threat of terrorism as a result of the school threats investigation. In that situation, he used posts on Instagram to target students with death threats.

"During the course of investigating his computer for the school threats, we came upon other material that we were forced to act upon,'' Grand Rapids Police Lt. Patrick Merrill told WZZM-13.

They acted upon it by charging Herrington with additional charges, including producing and possessing child sexually abusive material. Those offenses occurred on Christmas Day 2014, according to Kent County court records.

In addition to the pornography charges, Herrington was also arraigned on two counts of using a computer to commit a crime, for which he faces 20 years to life in prison, WZZM-13 reported.

Herrington was arraigned in Grand Rapids District Court Thursday on all of the charges.

There will be a probable-cause hearing and a preliminary hearing later this month.
